VLAA Appoints New Executive Director
Oct 24, 2025 | News & Events,
St. Louis Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts (VLAA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Nathaniel Carroll as its new Executive Director, effective November 10, 2025. He will succeed Executive Director Sue Greenberg, who is retiring at the end of 2025 after 39 of service.
Nathaniel Carroll comes to VLAA from Arch City Defenders, where he spent the last five years litigating class action civil rights cases and providing holistic legal care to indigent and unhoused individuals. He holds an English degree from Drury University and obtained his JD from Saint Louis University Law School in 2014, where he was one of the managing editors for the SLU Law Journal of Health & Policy. In 2015, Carroll received the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis Young Lawyers Award of Merit and has been included in the association’s Pro Bono Hall of Fame. Nathaniel is also a lifelong DIY musician and songwriter, performing hundreds of shows as Nathaniel Carroll & the Party Line across the U.S since 2003. His second album, IMPOSTER, was released in July. He is a proud parent of three artful children.
“We are thrilled to welcome Nathaniel as our new Executive Director,” said Board President Tim Mooney, who led the highly competitive search process. “Nathaniel’s unique background as a lawyer and a musician, as well as his deep passion for our mission, makes him the ideal choice to lead VLAA and to guide our thriving organization into its next chapter.”
As Executive Director, Carroll will oversee VLAA’s strategic direction and will manage day-to-day operations including referrals for pro bono legal and accounting assistance, educational programs, advocacy, marketing and community engagement initiatives, and fundraising.
“I am excited and humbled by this opportunity to lead VLAA forward,” Carroll said. “Art, as a form of free expression, helps each of us cope with the harsh realities of the human condition. Our work at VLAA empowers artists to keep creating, documenting, and sharing their talents for the benefit of our entire community. I hope to honor Sue Greenberg’s legacy while growing VLAA’s community of creatives, nonprofit cultural organizations, volunteers, and supporters.”
The Board is deeply grateful to Greenberg, who led VLAA from its formative years into a highly respected, agile, and robust arts service organization.
“It’s a great comfort to know that I’m leaving VLAA in such capable hands. Nathaniel not only possesses the right qualifications but also embodies the values that are at the heart of our work. I hope he enjoys the job as much as I did.”
About VLAA
St. Louis Volunteer Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts (VLAA) supports the bi-state region’s creative community by providing free legal and accounting assistance, hosting a wide variety of affordable educational programs, and advocating for the arts sector. VLAA also offers rewarding opportunities for volunteers, who annually contribute more than $350,000 in pro bono professional services. The nonprofit tax-exempt organization was co-founded in 1982 by the City’s St. Louis Arts and Humanities Commission (now the Regional Arts Commission), St. Louis University School of Law, and a small board of directors. Accountants were added in 1984. In 2019, after being housed with the Regional Arts Commission for more than 30 years, VLAA moved to the High Low, The Kranzberg Arts Foundation’s literary arts venue in the Grand Center arts district.
