3 Takeaways: Copyright Clinic

1. Copyright protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, plays, paintings, choreography, movies, songs (and computer software). Copyright does not protect ideas; it protects how ideas are expressed.

2. It’s important to address and clarify copyright ownership as early as possible in your working relationships.

3. Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and “fixed” in a tangible form. Registration is not required, but it’s recommended. For more information: US Copyright Office. See Circular 34 for specific information on registering multiple works with one application.

Copyright Clinic, part of our Business Edge professional development series, was presented via Zoom on March 23, 2020. Thanks to our presenter, Laila Wolgram, Polsinelli.
